MAT Strategies, Practice & Review

OVERALL RATING:

Kaplan’s MAT includes more than 800 sample analogies, plus Kaplan’s exclusive test-taking strategies to maximize students’ scores. This powerful combination makes this book a highly effective way to prepare for the MAT.

ATI TEAS Strategies, Practice & Review includes:

  • 7 full-length practice tests with detailed answer explanations
  • Word lists with 1000+ terms to help you focus your study
  • Chapter quizzes to help you learn terms and strategies
  • Review of the general knowledge tested on the MAT, including literature, history, vocabulary, mathematics, fine arts, and more, with practice analogies in each of the four major subject areas
  • Strategies for answering different types of analogy questions

The main strong point of this prep book is its in-depth and thorough concept review. This concept overview really goes into deep detail on the subjects.

There are also tons of tips and strategies for the different questions on the exam. If you’re looking for a more strategy focused test prep book Kaplan is a better fit for you.

Barron’s MAT, 11th Edition: Miller Analogies Test

OVERALL RATING:

The book’s main features include:

  • A diagnostic test and ten full-length practice exams
  • Self-scoring answer keys following each test
  • Approximately 1,300 additional practice questions with answers
  • Advice to help test takers solve analogy problems

One great positive about this book is the enormous amount of practice test and problems contained within. This prep guide has more practice tests and problems than any other prep book on our list. If you are looking for as many practice tests as possible Barrons is the best choice for you.

MAT For Dummies

OVERALL RATING:

MAT For Dummies includes test-specific analogy strategies, practice and review for each content area, word/terms lists covering the major subject categories, and six practice tests with detailed answer banks. The book is well organized and explains the MAT test in basic terms. The six complete practice tests allow you to get a really good idea of how prepared you are for the actual test.

MAT For Dummies is pretty decent, it is not as in-depth as other prep guides on our list. Some of the review questions have some typographical errors that distract from your studying.

McGraw-Hill Education 500 MAT Questions to Know

OVERALL RATING:

This prep book focuses a lot more on practice questions and tests rather than in-depth subject review and includes 500 MAT-like analogy question, full explanations for each question in the answer key and a format parallel to that of the actual exam.

These questions are similar to the ones you’ll find on the MAT so you will know what to expect on test day. Each question includes a concise, easy-to-follow explanation in the answer key for your full understanding of the concepts. With these answer explanations you can really learn from your mistakes, thus increasing your score on the exam.

If you’re just looking for practice questions, this preparation guide would be great to pick up.

MAT Flashcard Study System

OVERALL RATING:

MAT Flashcard Study System uses repetitive methods of study to teach you how to break apart and quickly solve difficult test questions on the Miller Analogies Test. Study after study has shown that spaced repetition is the most effective form of learning, and nothing beats flashcards when it comes to making repetitive learning fun and fast.

Overall this is a great supplemental or additional source of study. It might be a nice change of pace from other fully comprehensive materials.

This book has a good amount of content and it has received good feedback from it’s users. Princeton also has a good online library of video tutorials, study plans, essay examples, along with grad school admissions advice.

Although it is unclear exactly how many total practice questions are offered with the book, we do know that you will be able to take 6 full-length computer-adaptive practice tests online that give realistic scoring and answer explanations. But we would only recommend purchasing this book if you have exhausted the GMAC and Kaplan practice exams and are looking for an extra set of fresh questions.

LSAT Logical Reasoning Bible

OVERALL RATING:

This book along with the LSAT Logic Games, are the most popular of the PowerScore LSAT series, probably due to the fact that they cover the more intimidating test sections so well. They are both a must have for those really trying to excel on the test.

This book in particular explains methods for conquering all aspects of Logic Reasoning problems including: recognizing types of questions, identifying common elements, making accurate inferences, and being able to quickly eliminate answer choices throughout the solving process. It covers all currently tested question types including: formal logic, conditional reasoning, and causality.

It has received high praise from those who have used it in their test prep. It’s popularity can be attributed to the efficient systems and problem solving methods for each type of LSAT question in the Logical Reasoning section.

The LSAT Trainer

OVERALL RATING:

The LSAT Trainer is a newer resource which has become a favorite among test takers. This is because it is a comprehensive workbook which covers the full exam simply, and effectively. There is little to be found in the area of complaints for this book.

Mike Kim, experienced tutor and one of the brains behind the Manhattan LSAT prep system, is an expert at explaining what it takes to master the LSAT. His writing style is clear and the advice always easy to follow.

This book walks readers through lessons and test taking strategies combined with relative drills and hundreds of real LSAT problems to solidify what is covered. It is popular because it is comprehensive but also very clear and concise.

This is a great book for those who want to cover the full subject matter of the test in 600 pages of study, as many other comprehensive LSAT books can be quite large.

10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests Volume V: PrepTests 62-71

OVERALL RATING:

It is always important to compliment your studies with materials from the actual administrator of the test. For the best test practice at a low price, you can’t beat the 10 Actual series. Each book includes: 10 previously administered LSATs, an answer key for each test, a writing sample for each test,score-conversion tables, and sample Comparative Reading questions and explanations.

Kaplan LSAT Premier 2015 with 6 Real Practice Tests

OVERALL RATING:

Although not as popular as the LSAT Trainer this course provides more content. For those looking for a very comprehensive guide that covers material from all of the LSAT sections, this is a great book to have. Not only does it provide almost 1,200 pages of test preparation, users will also have access to useful online resources, mobile resources, and a DVD containing video lessons and admissions advice. The Interactive Online Companion is one of those resources, making instructor led workshops and test analytics available to students. While Kaplan does offer flashcards to purchase separately, they are not the most recommended.

Kaplan is a proven leader in test preparation and really stands behind their LSAT material. This is a great and inexpensive resource to figure out where you’re at in your overall test preparation. Other books would be helpful alongside the practice tests Kaplan provides, if students know or realize they need extra work in specific test areas.

It is a great book which provides multiple approaches to studying instead of just the same method over and over. With this many pages of strategies, lessons, practice questions, practice tests, and online resources, readers who can get through it, will be confident in their LSAT preparation.

Kaplan also offers a slightly different Kindle Version along with other free apps and online resources.

Considering all of the added online content and resources that Kaplan offers, this 600 page book provides the most added value when it comes to the more consolidated GRE prep books.

ETS: The Official Guide to the GRE, 2nd Edition

OVERALL RATING:

If you are looking for the most authoritative guide to the GRE, this is probably your best bet since it is written by ETS (the writers of the GRE Test). Readers of this book will have a most accurate idea of what to expect on their GRE Test and have access to hundreds of authentic test questions to study from.

This book also offers 4 full length practice tests (2 in book, 2 on CD-ROM), which will really give someone a great understanding of what to expect as they come from the test makers themselves. As for content it covers content for the major areas of the GRE including: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing with scored samples.

This book may not provide as many practice questions, exams, or additional resources as some, but those who have it will have access to the most authentic and authoritative GRE study content available. ETS also offers a Kindle version.

The Princeton Review: Cracking the GRE Premium Edition with 6 Practice Tests, 2016 Edition

OVERALL RATING:

Another renowned education company with a another great GRE product. Much of their book is focused on test strategy and breaking down questions. They do have drills for each test section including: Verbal, Math, and Writing.

Their strength seems to lie in preparing students for the the verbal and writing sections of the test, as their math explanations could be more thorough. They do have vocabulary flashcards offered separately for those who would like access to their verbal content alone.

The premium edition includes 6 practice tests (2 in the book and 4 online), of which the online tests give thorough score reports for students to really see where they need to improve. Their online portal also gives access to video tutorials on testing strategies, study plans, and essay samples. The Princeton Review also offers a Kindle version.

In general, as in previous editions, the book’s main strength lies in its explanation of the verbal section of the test. For the math section, however, its explanations are often too simplistic or insufficient.

Barron’s GRE

OVERALL RATING:

Barron’s GRE also covers the verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections of the test for nearly half the price of other prep books. That being said it doesn’t have as many full length exams and may not be the easiest to follow.

Included with the book is a diagnostic exam to begin with and learn areas for improvement. There are also 2 full length practice tests with answers and explanations provided. Barron’s also includes additional online content  including: study plans, video lessons, additional practice questions, and skill reporting to track your progress. They do have an iPad app, but be weary as the app reviews are not the best.

Barron’s provides a good amount of content at a lower price, but their courses may be more difficult to follow if you aren’t already familiar with many of the concepts covered. If you are looking for something inexpensive and already grasp a lot of GRE concepts, this may be a good book for review.
