OVERALL RATING:

Technically this is not a book, but is way too effective not to mention. If you are really looking to master the PCAT this will give you the practice you need. The software includes: 10 complete practice tests, 2420 practice questions, comprehensive solutions,  along with video explanations for all verbal, biology, chemistry, reading, and math questions. The software does not expire and users can upgrade any new features for free. Some new features include: peer score review, 6 hours of bonus reading strategy videos, and bonus writing prompt questions. The software allows you to track the exact areas of the test on which you need to improve. It is recommended that students have internet access to get the full course features.

This is a great course for students who already have a grasp on the concepts and really want to test themselves.  It may be good to get an affordable comprehensive book to supplement some more learning before testing yourself.

Kaplan PCAT 2016-2017 Strategies, Practice, and Review

OVERALL RATING:

This Kaplan guide was completely reformulated to the 2016-2017 PCAT blueprint to prepare students for what they’d encounter on test day. A couple of things that stand out about this book are that it is the Official PCAT Prep Provider and is very popular amongst students.

Part of it’s popularity has to do with how organized and easy to comprehend it is, along with it’s many great features. The book offers nearly 1000 pages of content which is much more than other leading prep providers.  Students will have a comprehensive review of all test subjects on the PCAT, 2 full-length  online practice test, over 500 practice questions with explanations, and test strategies to conquer the PCAT with.

All in all this is the most popular prep book because it is an authoritative reference and includes the most content out of any PCAT prep book around.

Master the PCAT

OVERALL RATING:

Here we have another very comprehensive and popular book to consider when studying for the PCAT. What stands out about this book is that is straight to the point with less fluff than other books. It also goes into detail for each subtest subject including: Writing (part 1 &2), Verbal Ability, biology, Chemistry, Reading comprehension, and Quantitative Ability.

The book includes: “numerous” practice questions with explanations, a diagnostic test to give a better idea of what to focus study efforts on, 1 full-length practice test with explanations, study tips, and helpful details about the exam itself. Although it was released in 2012 and some items may need to be updated, it still remains a main contender for PCAT preparation.

One major disadvantage of Master the PCAT is that certain sections are much less comprehensive than similar sections in other books. For example, the verbal section is only 28 pages, and the reading comprehension section is just 10 pages.

Overall this book offers a lot of quality content at a very affordable price and covers all of the main test topics. It is also is one of the only books to offer any sort of diagnostic testing, so that students can start off studying the right things.

Barron’s PCAT, 6th Edition

OVERALL RATING:

Barron’s recently updated and released this book so students would have a more current reference for the test. What stands out about this book is that it practices and explains questions from each test topic in about half as many pages as other leading books. Obviously it won’t have as much detail as others but rest assured it will have quality material coming from a large test prep company like Barron’s.

While this book may need to be supplemented with another study book in order to achieve more extensive coverage of the subtest materials, it is still one of the best PCAT prep books for its extensive provision of practice questions. Moreover, the helpful information on life in pharmacy beyond the PCAT is definitely a nice bonus.

PCAT Flashcards, Premium Edition

OVERALL RATING:

REA’s flashcard book for the PCAT allows users to gauge how ready they are for the test. This is more of a supplemental resource for other books of study.

These 350 flashcards along with their detailed answer explanations are presented in book format. The fact that students can take a diagnostic online quiz (total of 4 quizzes) every time they go through the book allows them to study much more efficiently. The book has practice questions for each category of the PCAT. This is a really excellent way to focus on improving areas of weakness for the test.

Overall this is a great supplemental or additional source of study. It might be a nice change of pace from other fully comprehensive materials.

Best PSAT Prep Books

A good PSAT score means more scholarship opportunities, so it is important that you are adequately prepared for the test. You will need to be efficient in Critical Reading, Math, and Writing Skills  in order to finish the test in the allotted 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Barron’s PSAT with CD-ROM, 17th Edition

OVERALL RATING:

Barron’s is a test prep company known for delivering very clear and user friendly content. With a Diagnostic test, 4 full-length practice tests with explanations, automatic scoring(for CD-ROM), hundreds of additional practice questions on each subject, and PSAT tips / strategies, this book is a clear winner. This is a great resource due to all of the easy to understand quality content along with sufficient practice to go along with it.

The one main weakness of Barron’s is that the cumulative chapter tests are somewhat confusing at which portion of the topic you’re answering for. This can make some of the end of chapter practice questions not very useful since you don’t exactly know what are you answering the question for.

Kaplan PSAT/NMSQT  Strategies, Practice and Review

OVERALL RATING:

Kaplan is another reliable test prep company and have created a comprehensive guide covering all sections of the PSAT. This book Includes: 4 full-length practice tests, 1 full diagnostic test, 500 realistic practice questions with explanations, review of all test sections, and study guides to help students make it through.

The book begins by laying out the basics of the PSAT itself before describing general test taking strategies. It then proceeds to examine the three main topics of the PSAT – math, reading and writing.

This is a great book for those who would like access to extra online features such as flashcards and videos to reinforce the concepts from the book.

One flaw of Kaplan’s is that some of the questions are either misprinted or unclear. Misprinted questions or errors really make you waste time and make you scratch your head in confusion wondering why you got a question wrong when it was actually correct.

Gruber’s Complete PSAT/NMSQT Guide 2015

OVERALL RATING:

For more than 30 years, Dr. Gary Gruber has been the leading authority on standardized testing and test preparation. His famous Gruber Method has assisted thousands of students in dramatically boosting their test-taking confidence and standardized test scores.

Gruber’s has written a very comprehensive guide for the PSAT. It consists of 3 full length practice tests, a mini PSAT with detailed answer explanations, inside info on the exam, a  mini math refresher course, 101 most important math questions, a grammar review guide and more. This book really stands out in regards to learning math. This is a very detailed and very affordable way to study for the test.

Cracking the PSAT/NMSQT with 2 Practice Tests

OVERALL RATING:

This guide does a good job of organizing the material and making it seem less overwhelming. Where it really stands out is in giving strategies for breaking down each test questions type, along with it’s strong vocabulary and essay writing material. It contains 2 full-length practice tests along with bonus SAT practice exam to start getting prepared with.

All of this is delivered on over 500 pages in an easy to follow, clearly structured and presented manner. Part I begins with an introduction to the PSAT/NMSQT and offers strategies on how best to approach the test. Part II covers the exam’s entire subject matter, from reading comprehension and punctuation to math principles and math techniques.

500 PSAT Practice Questions

OVERALL RATING:

This is not an in-depth comprehensive review, but rather practice questions and answers for students to supplement their other study materials with. It gives detailed explanations for every question type that show up on the exam.

OVERALL RATING:

This is another popular book with many similar features to Kaplan. What stands out about this book is that it contains the most full-length practice tests having 3 in the book and 2 online.

From it,  students will get a useful review of all GED subjects, frequent use of examples throughout, a word list to improv vocabulary, a diagnostic test,  5 full-length practice tests, and valuable details about how the test is formatted and scored. They have a good online platform where students can time their tests and experience technology enhanced question styles.

Peterson’s Master the GED Test is great for students who would like access to more practice tests and use a great online platform.

As an added benefit, the writing style of this book is very friendly. It employs a conversational tone and uses simple, easy-to-understand language, making this one of the best GED books on the market.

McGraw-Hill Education Preparation for the GED Test with DVD-ROM

OVERALL RATING:

Another leading test prep publisher, Mcgraw Hill, is updateing their GED prep book for 2015. This book eases readers through a large amount of material. What stands out about this book is that, in addtion to the 2 tests in the book,  it includes a DVD-ROM that contains 2 practice test in the new technology based-formats.

With Preparation for the GED Test, test preparers will be able to : study all 4 test subjects, take 4 full-length practice exams, pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses through pretests, quiz themselves after each learned subject, and learn all about the test and what to expect.

Although this book doesn’t have extra online features, it is great as an all inclusive course and the DVD-ROM provides two excellent examples of the new computer based format of the test. It would be good to double-check on the system requirements for the computer program.

Barron’s: How to Prepare for the GED Test

OVERALL RATING:

This book was written with the 2014 computer based GED in mind. What stands out about it is that it has a CD-ROM where students to take 2 full-length practice tests simulating the computer based format. They have not however, released a 2015 version.

All together the book includes: diagnostic tests, 4 practice tests, material on the 4 main subjects. It may be a good backup or supplement to more current study options.

  • 1024 X 768 display resolution
  • Mac OS X v.10.1 through 10.4
  • CD-ROM Player
  • Browser with Adobe® Flash® Player installed

Unfortunately, the book does contain a number of errors and the practice tests on the accompanying CD do not give an actual score, but only provide a tally of wrong answers.

The Princeton Review: Cracking the GED Test, 2017 Edition

OVERALL RATING:

This book is good for test strategy as it has a lot of useful tips and tactics to help students work smarter on the exam. It also reviews each test subject, has 2 full practice tests in book, and an additional 350 practice questions.

It does not provide as many practice tests as some of the other top GED books and has received some mixed internet reviews; however, for only $17 readers get 832 pages of content that was written with the 2015 test in mind.

As an added benefit, the writing style of this book is very friendly. It employs a conversational tone and uses simple, easy-to-understand language. In sum, this comprehensive GED study guide is up to date, helpful, thorough, and – last but not least – great value for money.

The Official SAT Study Guide with DVD

OVERALL RATING:

No list of the best SAT books can ignore the Official SAT Guide. This is the most authoritative guide on the SAT around because it was written by the test makers themselves. It has everything you need to prepare for the SAT covering math, critical reading, and writing sections of the test in great detail.

Not only does it contain loads of authoritative content to learn from, but students are also provided with 10 official SAT practice tests, a bonus practice test, and the answer explanations for each one . Students can even see how they are doing on each test attempt with free online score reports.

It may be wise to supplement this book with other SAT prep guides as this one can be somewhat short-sided in the “how to” realm or with giving adequate explanations. It is said that the DVD instructional videos are very short and only cover the more simple concepts. Overall though, it is a must have for it’s practice tests and to know what to expect on the exam.

Overall this is a great book to learn with as it does a good job of explaining  SAT material. For better expectations for the test it would be wise to combine it with the ever authoritative The Official SAT Study Guide.

Cracking the SAT Premium Edition with 8 Practice Tests, 2015

OVERALL RATING:

Princeton Review is a leading test preparation provider who has helped countless students achieve success on their standardized tests. Their Cracking the SAT Premium has a lot of easy to understand content along with helpful online resources.

The Princeton Premium Portal gives students online access to topical drills, instant scoring for the online tests, essay scoring, video tutorials for each section of the SAT, weekly study plans, admissions advice, and more.

This book is good for those who would like a good basis for understanding the exam concepts. It would be best to pair it with The Official SAT Study Guide, as it lacks strength in it’s grammar section along with it’s full-length tests.

Barron’s SAT, 27th Edition

OVERALL RATING:

Barron’s test prep is another renowned test prep company. Their SAT book offers a good balance of study advice, testing techniques, and review of all subjects covered on the exam. What stands out about this book is that it offers a lot of extra features for a great price.

Also available online is a personalized study plan, expert video lessons on difficult concepts, additional practice quizzes, and a comprehensive SAT skill report to gauge your progress.

Overall this book probably has the most features per dollar spent; however, it doesn’t offer as many full-length practice tests.

Gruber’s Complete SAT Guide 2015

OVERALL RATING:

This popular study tool was created by Dr. Gary Gruber, an SAT guru and test taking expert. The book is successful in combining strategic test taking advice with core SAT knowledge.

The book includes a unique diagnostic test with explanations, the 101 most important math questions, a mini math refresher, a complet math refresher, a brief and complet grammar review, the most important SAT words, The world’s shortest SAT test with thorough explanations, and 5 full-length practice tests with detailed answers.

The Real ACT Prep Guide, 3rd Edition

OVERALL RATING:

From the Creators of the actual test we are presented with the Real ACT Prep Guide. This book continues to be a standard among those preparing for the ACT and rightfully so. It is the only prep book that includes 5 full-length tests created by the makers of the ACT. The quality of official questions is far better than questions written by unofficial sources like Kaplan and Princeton Review

Those who use this book gain an insider’s perspective on the ACT through test-taking tips, strategy, practice tests, and insights from the ACT creators. The books strengths revolve more around the authentic practice tests, since the tips and strategy may seem on the weaker side.

While there are not many other resources or materials that come with the book it is the authoritative reference for what to actually expect on the test. For this reason it holds strong as the best book in it’s class. There is no way around this book – it’s a clear must-buy.
TAKE ME TO THE REAL ACT PREP GUIDE

The Princeton Review: Cracking the ACT Premium 2017 Edition, 8 Practice Tests

OVERALL RATING:

Here we have another quality “Cracking the…” prep book from the Princeton Review. With this book users get a whole slew of test taking strategies, numerous practice questions, and 8 full-length practice tests with detailed answer explanations (4 in book, 4 online).

The book is well organized and covers all topics that appear on the ACT. Each chapter contains a summary to help students sort through what is most important for them. This guide explains what to watch out for on the test, teaches the material, and gives sufficient practice.

Along with the book, users will be granted access to Princeton’s premium online portal. Their online resources include video tutorials, customized multi-week study plans, and the ability to see and track scores from online tests and essays.

Overall, we recommend Cracking the ACT as one of the most motivational and best ACT prep books.

TAKE ME TO PRINCETON ACT

Kaplan ACT 2016 with 8 Practice Tests

OVERALL RATING:

Kaplan has delivered some good content with their ACT 2015 offering. As always with Kaplan you get much more than just a book.

When purchased students will get access to 8 full-length practice tests (5 online, 3 in the book), a DVD giving brief video tutorial overview of each chapter, and other strategic testing tips. Another great feature is their online center where students can make use of various online quizzes, videos, and flashcards. Kaplan also offers a Kindle version of this product.

Particularly noteworthy among the various features is Kaplan’s SmartPoints approach. SmartPoints is designed to help test-takers to concentrate on those points that are most likely to be tested on the day of the exam.

Considering all of the online content and resources that Kaplan offers, this book provides some great additional value. Some users have complained about not being able to access the online materials along with typos they’ve found, while others have been quite happy with it in their studies.

TAKE ME TO KAPLAN ACT

Barron’s ACT

OVERALL RATING:

Barron’s continues to be a hit among students, as they provide a good amount of study material and at a really low price. This course covers all the topics of the act and is known to have content that is very relative to the actual test.

The book starts out with FAQ’s about the ACT exam. It then takes you into a full-length diagnostic test to help set up how you should focus your preparation. They of course cover testing strategy and study plans, along with additional online material. There online materal includes expert video lessons that provide solutions for difficult concepts. This is a rare feature among courses.

Many students enjoy having more practice exams, but if you think 3 is enough for you, than Barron’s would definitely be a good choice. This is definitely a favorite among test takers for both the the content and the price.

TAKE ME TO BARRONS ACT

ACT For Dummies

OVERALL RATING:

From the all too popular “For Dummies” series comes the “ACT For Dummies” prep book. While not as comprehensive as some of the other prep books out there it definitely gives a good overview of the test. Being nearly half the length of other books it is definitely a less intense route of study.

The book is written in a more approachable tone and could be a good place to start for someone who isn’t very familiar with the test material or sure on how to begin studying.

As with the other prep books, readers will have access to  tips, strategies, practice problems, and 3 full-length practice tests that cover all the major topics from the test. If you feel anxious about the material covered on the ACT, this book can be a good way to ease into preparing for the exam, then dive into something with a little more depth afterward.

In sum, a great book and particularly helpful if used together with the accompanying online study tools and practice tests (three full-length tests are already in the book).
