ETS: Official Guide to the TOEFL Test With CD-ROM, 4th Editon

OVERALL RATING:

The Official Guide to the TOEFL Test is the most authoritative guide to the exam on the market, brought to you straight from the test makers themselves. So it is the most accurate resource on the format of the exam and the content it covers. Whenever the test creators offer their own study materials, it is usually wise to consider this option.

This book includes 600 real TOEFL questions for practice as well as explanations of every section of the test and info regarding what is expected on every speaking and writing task.

Although it does not have audio for the listening portion of the test, it contains 3 authentic TOEFL iBT’s (on the CD-ROM) that look just like what you will experience on test day. The Official Guide to the TOEFL Test is the closest students will get to the real iBT experience. It would also be wise to compliment it with other material which covers the listening portion of the test, like the Official TOEFL iBT Tests with Audio.

ETS: Official TOEFL iBT Tests with Audio

OVERALL RATING:

This book i another very “Official” study resource from ETS (the test creators). It contains 5 retired TOEFL test forms with real TOEFL reading, writing, speaking, and listening questions. Each form has an answer key and complete audio transcripts. The CD includes audio for every listening passage of the test.

All in all readers will have access to more than 300 TOEFL questions, audio for the listening sections of the test, and test results worksheets to record our progress on each test attempt.

Overall this would be a great supplementary tool to use with the Official Guide to the TOEFL Test, since it mostly provides plenty of practice for each test section.

Barron’s Practice Exercises for the TOEFL with Audio CDs

OVERALL RATING:

As a leader in standardized test preparation, Barron’s has really created a great resource for those preparing to take either the TOEFL (PBT) or TOEFL (iBT) exams. Students enjoy this book because it provides them with enough practice to feel confident in taking their exam.

This book contains more than 1,000 practice exercises with explanations, example answers for speaking and writing, 2 full-length practice test (1 in each format), and six CDs that forvide audio practice for the test’s speaking, listening, and integrated writing sections.

In conclusion this book is great for those who need a lot of practice and want to cover all of the sections of the exam. Even though it is not from the test creators, it does have the most practice questions and the audio to go with it.

Nova Speaking and Writing Strategies for the TOEFL iBT (Book & Audio CD)

OVERALL RATING:

Nova has taken a different approach to studying with this book, but don’t worry, it wouldn’t be included if it wasn’t helpful. As the title suggests it focuses strictly on speaking and writing by using a strategy called argument mapping. Nova does this because the TOEFL iBT speaking and writing sections are all about developing and delivering spoken and written arguments in a proficient manner.

Along with mapping out arguments the book teaches: essential rhetorical strategies and opinion development strategies, step-by-step basic responses for all speaking and writing tasks, step-by-step advanced responses for all speaking and writing tasks, step-by-step emergency responses for all speaking and writing tasks, how to revise your responses, and how to rate your responses.

This book is good for those who are more focused on how to improve their speaking and writing performance on the exam. It is not a comprehensive resource which covers everything on the TOEFL, but it has proven to be helpful for the sections it does cover.

Kaplan TOEFL iBT Premier 2016-2017 with 4 Practice Tests

OVERALL RATING:

Kaplan’s  TOEFL iBT Premier covers all sections of the exam and is written in a very clear and comprehensible manner. One of the things that stands out about this book is that it breaks down sections of the exam into different types of questions you will come across along with how to answer them.

Students will receive 4 full-length online practice tests with detailed explanations, targeted practice for each area of the test, audio for the speaking & listening & writing sections along with the transcripts to follow along, tips and strategies for various question types, and instant feedback on online practice to easily track progress. The book includes two CDs with over 95 minutes of listening passages and questions for students to use.

As usual Kaplan has delivered a great product, which should be used by students who need something that is well organized and perhaps a little easier to comprehend. This book is best for students who have already done some studying for the TOEFL or already have advanced English skills. It doesn’t walk through as many steps or give as much basic information as some of the other prep books.
